Nike and UNKNWN Refurbish the Summit Lake Community Center in Ohio for NBA All Star Weekend 2022
UNKNWN revealed the results of a refurbishment to the Summit Lake Community Center (SLCC) in Akron as all eyes are on LeBron James’ hometown for the excitement of NBA All-Star 2022 Weekend. In partnership with Nike, the project sheds light on Akron and sets in motion meaningful change for members of the community.
The NBA All-Star Weekend 2022 in Cleveland brings to life a push forward for the city. The refurbishment of the Summit Lake Community Center takes the lead on channeling the strength of Akron’s youth, committing to furthering change and development through athletics and education. Akron’s next generation of leaders are stepping into their roles to continue making a difference.
UNKNWN’s commitment to the SLCC includes upgrades and new additions to programming, facilities, the community, staff and volunteers. Prior to embarking on the refurbishment, UNKNWN met with staff and community members to ensure the work would meet Akron’s unique needs for years to come. Committed to the local community throughout the process, Akron businesses were hired to complete the project including Eberhardt Construction and interior design company JR Designs.
Highlights of the refurbishment include a renovated classroom and lounge. The classroom update includes a new design and more functional layout, interior improvements, new chairs, desks, and school supplies. The entrance to the lounge is marked with a plaque with a personal message from LeBron James celebrating the spirit of Akron. The lounge will be utilized as a game room space equipped with new games and activities for kids. The design and furnishings are upgraded to serve as a safe and fun space for kids to gather. New furniture, PlayStations and foosball tables have been added. A customized UNKNWN vending machine at the SLCC will be stocked with special edition merchandise and essentials including dopp kits, socks, deodorant and healthy snacks.
Funding and awareness will lead to a broader variety of classes, additional leadership and mentorship from adult volunteers and increased capability of SLCC’s key role in providing meals and general necessities year-round to the surrounding community thanks to local Akron businesses like organic food store Mustard Seed Market & Cafe, laundromat Carriage Hill Cleaners, and barbershop Levels Barber Studio. UNKNWN will also distribute hygiene kits for men and women, oral hygiene kits, apparel, accessories, RXBars, and gift cards to utilize at local businesses.
In addition to improving existing facilities and programming, UNKNWN will honor the refurbishment with impactful programming throughout All-Star Weekend. UNKNWN worked to level up existing SLCC programming to provide kids with meaningful sessions on career and personal development counseling with local community leaders as added resources. Activities include community meals, speaking panels with local leaders, watch parties, tie dye stations, and screen-printing lessons.
