It was an auspicious beginning when Suzanne Felsen received a sapphire upon her birth in Los Angeles, California. Growing up in a family professionally involved with the arts, Suzanne was inspired by her extensive travels to international cultural sites. Memories include, two months in India, a Lalique show in London, Art Nouveau jewelry and Gaudi architecture in Spain. Exposure to gems started early with frequent visits to the Natural History Museum and the Smithsonian. At the age of sixteen, her mother offered her the chance to design something unique with the sapphire birthstone. This opportunity sparked the desire to design that continued to grow as years passed. Inspired to learn the process, Suzanne began by taking silversmithing classes. She later apprenticed for several years with a Los Angeles goldsmith. After classes in design and gemology of the Gemological Institute of America, in California, she moved to New York City and continued her studies at Parson School of Design.
Suzanne Felsen's designs begin with the color, cut, and quality of the gemstones. She carefully selects by hand each gemstone used in the collection. Combinations of riotous colors are framed by her streamlined settings. Unusual and rare gemstones are often found in the collection along with unique cuts created by the designer. The designs exude classical warmth balanced with a modern edge.
