Nike Air Max Day 30th Anniversary

To honor 30 years of Air Max, UNKNWN breaks down the very inspirations, sketches, and moments that brought the game-changing technology from revolutionary idea to reality. Inspired by the infamous Centre Georges Pompidou, a 20th century high-tech iconoclast building, in which facades are traded for visibility, revealing the inner functional structural elements for all to see, Tinker Hatfield made the decision to reveal Nike's air bubble in 1987. Taking a cue from the Centre’s architects, who prided themselves on the building’s “inside-out” aesthetic, Hatfield redesigned Nike’s running staple to show, not hide, its functional structural inner elements. March 26, 2017 will mark 30 years since the advent of this revolutionary technology–and the release of over 50 different sneakers utilizing Nike’s groundbreaking technology.
