We recently sat down with Sven Vogtland, founder of Coyo Taco and 1-800 Lucky for editorial of the latest COMME des Garçons PLAY. For more on how he got his start in nightlife, the importance of music in each space and some of his favorite DJs check out the interview below and shop the collection here

UNKNWN: So you’re behind two great restaurants/venues in Wynwood, how did you get your start in the nightlife industry?

SVEN: I started my time in nightlife as a DJ in the late 90’s. I DJ’ed throughout high school and up until I opened Coyo Taco. Throughout this time I went to hospitality school and worked in high-end hotels and restaurants around the world then DJ’ed at nights. I made some great life long friends and contacts.

UNKNWN: When you walk into Coyo and 1-800-Lucky, aesthetic plays a big part of the experience - other than having great food, what was the process for developing a certain look and atmosphere for each space?

SVEN: Branding is everything to me. I worked with friends from New York who have an amazing branding team on both of these projects. The vibe at Coyo and Lucky is intangible. Its the music, merchandise, branding and DJ’s that help achieve this.

UNKNWN: They also have prominent spaces for music and the Coyo lounge was designed for specific sound, how important was is it for you to include a music aspect in each of these venues?

SVEN: Sound is very important to the brands. At Coyo Taco Wynwood we brought our Dynacord sound system from Berlin. I wanted to install extra sound in such a small room so that you could really feel it. Music and food are my two passions in life. I always incorporate both in all of my projects. I truthfully feel now that restaurants that only offer one thing is not enough.

UNKNWN: Who are some of your favorite artists and DJs right now?

SVEN: Right now I’m listening to a lot of Anderson Paak, NXWorries, The Internet, Kamaal Williams, Youssef Kamaal. For DJs I love Sango, Kaytranada, The Whooligan, Stone Love, and Benji B.

UNKNWN: How do you think style influences the nightlife industry in Miami?

SVEN: Style dictates the vibe and ambiance of a place. It really helps you choose where you chose to go out.

UNKNWN: Wynwood’s nightlife scene feels very different from the Beach, do you see that in the personal style of your guests?

SVEN: 100% Wynwood is more real and casual, come as you are vibes. Miami Beach is more like the Vegas strip for me. It has its beauty also, but very different from Wynwood. But, we see it all here from Lamborghinis to Donks.

UNKNWN: What does The Sport of Fashion mean to you?

SVEN: It means to me that is a game and a sport. Fashion is competitive and you need to always stay on point.

UNKNWN: Are there any upcoming parties we should look out for?

SVEN: Yes, The Gaslamp Killer on October 4th and look back to our lineups for Art Basel to see some of my favorite acts that I mentioned above.
